Lakeview, Mississauga

Lakeview is a neighbourhood in Mississauga in the Region of Peel. It shares its eastern border with the City of Toronto with Lake Ontario on its southern boundary. Although a street sign or two on Lakeshore Road greet you to Lakeview and Mississauga, the city borders blend together without any clear distinction that you have left one city and arrived in another. There are major plans underway to transform this waterfront location, from its industrial past to a vibrant lakeside micro-city.

Lakeview is one of Mississauga’s Lakeshore waterfront communities, an area that has been mainly industrial and the site of the 4 Sisters, the four smokestacks of the former Lakeview Generating Station. The generating station was decommissioned in 2007 and there are plans in place to revitalize the Lakeview portion of the Lakeshore as Mississauga aims to improve its lakefront.

Area

BOUNDARIES: Lakeview is bordered by Cawthra Road, The Queensway, Etobicoke Creek and Lake Ontario. Some landmarks here include Secret Park, Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School and the up-and-coming Lakeview Village.

Economy

Mississauga is recognized as one of Canada’s fast-growing economies, due in large part to revitalization projects like the Lakeview Village featuring a state-of-the-art Innovation District that aims to become the largest hub for technology, innovation and research in Canada. The Lakeview Innovation District will become a world-renowned centre for innovation with access to transit, connecting industry and employment to the lake and driving inclusive, and sustainable growth. Centrally located within the region’s Innovation Corridor, Lakeview has the distinct advantage of proximity to a growing ecosystem with several top-ranking universities, a diverse pool of talent, a favourable business climate, and Canada’s largest airport.

Roads & Highways

Lakeview lies adjacent to Mississauga’s busy Lakeshore Road Corridor, a vital transportation route for people who live and work in the area and depend on it for their daily commute. This 8-mile corridor is expected to grow by 56,000 people and 16,500 jobs by 2041 based on proposed developments in the Lakeshore Road Transportation Master Plan. The master plan’s long-term vision is for new fully separated bike lanes along the entire length of the corridor and several major transit service enhancements such as more frequent express bus service, transit signal upgrades at key intersections and construction of dedicated transit lanes.

Public Transit

Lakeview’s proximity to Port Credit & Long Branch GO Stations, future Light Rail Transit on Hurontario Street, and the planned rapid transit service (starting with BRT, but potentially eventually Light Rail Transit) on Lakeshore Road will continue to improve access to this area and allow for seamless connections across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Reasons to Live Here

Lakeview is an exceptionally scenic neighbourhood due to its location on Lake Ontario's northern shore. A major draw for this neighbourhood is the variety of outdoor leisure and recreation activities available here, with countless parks and hiking trails and the expansive waterfront trail. Further improving its livability is the Lakeview Village master-planned community, a mixed-use development currently in its preconstruction stage.

Education

Mississauga is served by the Peel District School Board, which operates the secular Anglophone public schools, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which operates Catholic Anglophone public schools, the Conseil scolaire Viamonde, which operates secular Francophone schools, and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud, which operates Catholic Francophone schools. Together the four boards run a total of more than 150 schools. The Lakeview area offers a number of options for education in close proximity including 10 public schools, 8 Catholic schools, and 5 private schools. Notable schools include Westacres PS for elementary level students, rated as one of the top schools in Mississauga. At the high school level Cawthra Park SS is recognized as one of Mississauga’s best high schools and offers a strong Music and Arts Program.

For post-secondary students, the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), one of three campuses of the University of Toronto is less than a 15-min drive away. The Mississauga Academy of Medicine is located on campus in the Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex.

Healthcare

Mississauga’s two main hospitals, Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital were amalgamated into the Trillium Health Partners (THP) hospital group in December 2011. To meet the needs of the growing Mississauga community, a full replacement of the Mississauga Hospital is underway. The new hospital will rise to 24 storeys and 2.8 million square feet to become the largest hospital in Canada.

Public Spaces

The Lakeview Village waterfront redevelopment will transform the 177-acre plot of land previously the site of the ‘four sisters’ coal power plant into a live-work-play neighbourhood.

The development is made up of seven distinct districts which will each fill a specific purpose that will complement the overall neighbourhood. Of all these districts, Lakeview Square is the centrepiece. This will be the place for shopping, dining and entertainment in Lakeview Village. The square will concentrate on attracting non-national retail tenants and programming. Lakeview Square will also front a man-made recreation pond which will offer kayaking for rent and paddle sports equipment for the residents and visitors.

Alongside of this downtown district will be the most exciting part of this proposal. It will be a linear urban park extending the width of the development that will feature a man-made water channel as its centrepiece and will be called Waterway Common. This will be a year-round public gathering place and also become a skating rink in the winter.
