You may have heard mentions of the upcoming Ontario Subway Line and wondered, “What’s all the fuss about?”
Here’s the fuss: the upcoming Ontario Subway Line offers loads of benefits and opens up several new transit options for hundreds of thousands of people. Not only that, but it will also reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gases, and fuel consumption.
Now that you know a little more about how incredible it will be, let’s talk about precisely what the Ontario Subway Line is and go through everything you need to know about it.
Let’s start at the start.
One of the four priority transit projects announced by the Province in 2019, the Ontario Subway Line is an exciting new 15-stop subway line. The Ontario Line will run from Exhibition Place through downtown to the Ontario Science Center in 30 minutes, cutting tedious travel time down significantly. Spanning almost 16 kilometres, the Ontario Subway Line will open transit access to more than 255,000 people.
Currently, there are 15 potential stops planned between Exhibition Place and Ontario Science Centre, as well as links to GO Transit and TTC Lines 1 and 2. There are over 40 proposed connections to various transit options, including:
The Ontario Subway Line will provide more efficient, frequent access to rapid transit to more than 255,000 residents who live within a 10-minute walk of an Ontario Line station. Additionally, the mix of surface track, elevated guideways, and underground tunnels brings transit to communities in need.
The Ontario Subway Line will also allow for economic job growth both during and after construction. Toronto residents will have access to up to 57,000 more jobs by transit within 45 minutes, and the construction of the Ontario Line will generate thousands of job opportunities annually.
Of course, you can’t have progress without putting in the work. Therefore, two blocks of Queen Street will close to vehicles for construction in early 2023. The blocks from Bay Street to Yonge Street and Yonge Street to Victoria Street are expected to be under construction for up to five years. However, it will still be open to the public for business.
