Neighbourhood Guide: The Garden District in Toronto

Jul 23, 2020 ,
Right in the heart of Downtown Toronto is a mini green oasis known as The Garden District. A popular little neighbourhood with public green space, great restaurants, close to shopping and well connected with transit options and some really great new condo buildings as residential options.
The Garden District is located on Shuter St, west of Jarvis St, in the heart of Downtown Toronto. Bordered by Yonge St to the west, Carlton St to the north, Sherbourne St to the east and Queen St East to the south, this vibrant downtown neighbourhood is immediately east of Toronto’s central downtown core, and close to fabulous shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. The Garden District is also home to two prestigious post secondary institutions: Ryerson University and George Brown college. Indulge in shopping at the landmark Eaton Centre Mall, catch a concert at Massey Hall, or spend some time outdoors at one of the many surrounding parks, all are just a short walk or bicycle ride away, in the Garden District.

Garden District was named in recognition of Allan Gardens, an indoor botanical garden located nearby at the intersection of Carlton and Jarvis Streets. One of the best free things to do in Toronto, a visit to Allan Gardens offers an exciting opportunity to explore a lush assortment of exotic plants right in the heart of the city. Whatever the weather is like outside, this climate-controlled conservatory offers visitors a slice of summer, 365 days a year.

The Allan Gardens park attracts thousands of visitors every year, hosts weddings during the summer and is one of Toronto’s oldest parks. Its glass-topped conservatory called the Palm House is beautiful inside and out, and the venue puts on seasonal displays every year, which change frequently. Outside of the conservatory is a playground for kids and a big off-leash dog park.

Thee Garden District has a vibrant arts, theatre and drama scene. After Allan Gardens closes down for the day, the Garden District’s other activities open up. At the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre.

Another nearby venue, Massey Hall, with a  hundred-year-old heritage. The Hall’s 1894 inception date is featured on almost every sign, reminding visitors of the rich artistic history its halls hold. Having hosted everyone from the Dalai Lama to Justin Bieber, Massey Hall still stands as one of the highlights of Toronto’s theatre scene.
