6 New and Exciting Things in Vaughan

#1. PwC-YMCA Tower at SmartCentres at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC)

At the heart of Vaughan’s downtown, the community meets at this 220,000-square-foot complex with direct access to the VMC subway station.

The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA will help lead this vibrant city to even greater heights. The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a more than 165-year-old charity committed to making communities stronger and setting people of all ages on the road to success.

The PwC-YMCA Tower will be home to a state of the art 100,000-square-foot YMCA with licensed child care and diverse programming, a full-sized gymnasium, multi-purpose fitness studio, a conditioning and weight room, aquatic facilities with two pools, whirlpools, steam rooms and a 20,000 square foot City of Vaughan Library. The City of Vaughan has 32,000 square feet for a new Vaughan Public Library branch, performing arts studios, and a community kitchen.

#2. Niagara University Opens Satellite Campus Location in Vaughan

The City of Vaughan has opened its doors to its very frst university. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua ofcially announced that Niagara University has expanded to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

“It has been my dream to bring a university to Vaughan. With focus, discipline and excellent partners, this dream has come true,” Bevilacqua said in a release. The 12,000-square-foot space will have seven classrooms and welcome over 300 students.

The school will focus on education programs, with students enrolling in either the Bachelor of Professional Studies in Education or the Master of Science in Education. Additional MBA programs were introduced in early 2020.

#3. IKEA Canada Expands Distribution with Grand Opening of Vaughan Customer Distribution

IKEA announced the grand opening of its 550,000 square foot Customer Distribution Centre in Kleinburg. In partnership with DHL, the new location further enables IKEA to have its products in the right place, closer to its customers, while also providing increased capacity for future growth.

“Today’s opening in Kleinburg [Vaughan] is an important step as IKEA Canada continues its transformation journey to become the leading multichannel home furnishings retailer,” said Liz Wilson, Country Customer Fulflment Manager, IKEA Canada.

The Kleinburg Customer Distribution Centre focuses on last mile delivery directly to customers’ homes and complements the retailer’s four stores and Mississauga Customer Distribution Centre in the GTA. Customers served by the new centre may expect to see shorter delivery lead times which will support the retailer’s expanded service ofering, including new lower pricing for parcel and truck delivery.

The site created approximately 120 indirect jobs and is operated by DHL Supply Chain, the Americas leader in contract logistics.

#4. Canada’s Wonderland Named One of Time’s 100″Greatest Places” in 2019

Canada’s Wonderland has been named one of the “World’s Greatest Places” in 2019. The second annual list compiled by TIME Magazine looks at nominations across categories that include museums, parks, restaurants and hotels.

In the world of roller coasters, it’s all about offering a thrill like no other. And that’s exactly what Canada’s Wonderland is doing with its new Yukon Striker ride. At 245 ft. tall (including underground portions) with a top speed of 80 m.p.h., the Yukon Striker has claimed the title as the world’s tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster—a model that features a 90-degree drop. This coaster plunges into an underwater tunnel, does a 360-degree loop and has floorless cars that leave riders hanging in the open air as they career along its 3,625 ft. of track for 3½ minutes of unbridled thrills.

#5. SmartCentres Place Bus Terminal In Vaughan Opens to the Public

SmartCentres Place Bus Terminal opened for service operations on November 3, 2019. This nine-bay YRT terminal will be in the centre of Vaughan, with easy connections to the subway and bus rapid transit.

The VMC subway station and VIVA bus rapid transit station at Highway 7 is only a two- minute walk through an aboveground park or an underground path, making this terminal the best way to connect travelers.

The terminal features modern architecture and is accessible from every direction to pedestrians, cyclists and transit customers.

#6. World’s First Cirque du Soleil Creactive centre coming to Vaughan Mills

The circus is coming to town, and you’re invited to join in the fun. Vaughan Mills will be home to the world’s first off-resort Cirque du Soleil Creactive family entertainment centre.

“Creactive will be a first of its kind, an innovative concept of indoor family entertainment experiences specially designed by Cirque du Soleil for retail locations, like Vaughan Mills,” Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said. “It will add to Vaughan’s already thriving tourism, creative, arts, entertainment and recreation industries.

The 24,000-square-foot circus playground will offer customers a chance to participate in a variety of Cirque du Soleil-inspired activities, including bungee jumping, aerial parkour, wire and trampolines, mask design, juggling, circus track activities, dance and more.
